Myanmar expects weak to moderate El Nino conditions in June

YANGON (Eleven Media Group): The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) has reported that it is forecast to reach weak to moderate El Nino conditions in June that may cause generally irregular rainfall patterns, rising temperature and irregular storm formation.

According to DMH, the Sea Surface Temperature (SST) over the Tropical Pacific Ocean near the Equator and atmosphere phenomena condition is weak.

According to the Numerical Weather prediction models of the International Meteorological Agency, it is forecast to reach weak to moderate El Nino conditions in June.

Although the El Nino condition occurs in the Pacific Ocean, the effect of El Nino may cause irregular rainfall patterns, rising temperatures and irregular storm formation.

The cumulonimbus clouds are developing over Bago, Yangon, Ayeyawady and Taninthayi Regions and Kayah, Kayin and Mon States.

The area along the cumulonimbus clouds movement, the weather phenomena such as strong winds accompanied with rain, thunder, lightning and hail may occur and therefore it is recommended to be aware in advance these phenomena, DHM reported.

On May 21, Rain was fairly widspread in Taninthayi Region, scattered in Mon State and isolated in Nay Pyi Taw, upper Sagaing, Bago and Yangon Regions and Kachin, southern Shan and Chin State. There were moderate clouds in the remaining regions and states.

Day temperatures were 5°C to 6°C above May average temperatures in Nay Pyi Taw, Bago and Taninthayi Regions and Chin State, 3°C to 4°C above May average temperatures in Sagaing, Mandalay, Magway and Yangon Regions and Shan, Kayah, Kayin and Mon States, and 2°C above May average temperatures in other regions and states.

The significant day temperatures were 43°C in Chauk and 42°C each in Magway and Taungdwingyi. The noteworthy amounts of rainfall recorded were 1.50 inches in Paung, 0.47 inch in Kawthaung, 0.59 inch in Chaungsone, 0.47 inch in Launglon, 0.43 inch in Kyaikkhami and 0.20 inch in Bili.
