PETALING JAYA: Umno has recorded a surge of nearly 4,000 new members within 24 hours of launching its new online membership registration dashboard, says Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

The party secretary-general said Umno received 3,716 new applications shortly after the system went live, with the majority of registrants comprising mostly youths.

“After returning from the mosque this morning, I checked the membership dashboard system and took the time to review and approve each application,” he said in a statement Tuesday (April 21).

He described the process as “tiring but exciting,” noting that the rapid uptake reflects renewed interest among younger Malaysians in the party.

Asyraf Wajdi added that the digital initiative is part of Umno’s broader efforts to modernise its operations and improve accessibility for prospective members.

He also thanked applicants for their willingness to join what he described as the party’s “noble struggle.”

On April 18, Umno allowed online membership registration following an amendment to its membership regulations, in a move aimed at making it easier for new members, especially youths, to join the party.

Supreme council member Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said the decision was made during the supreme council meeting held here yesterday.

"The amendment, in line with Clause 5.2 of the party constitution, will enable online registration and facilitate the entry of new members, particularly among young people," said Zambry.
