HONG KONG (China Daily/Asia News Network): The Hong Kong Observatory said it will consider raising Typhoon Signal No 1 on Tuesday (Aug 23) night as Tropical Cyclone Ma-on is expected to move closer to the city.
In a weather advisory, the Observatory said the tropical cyclone will move across the vicinity of the northern part of Luzon and Luzon Strait on Tuesday.
“It is expected to come within 800km of Hong Kong tonight. The Observatory will consider issuing the Standby Signal No.1 then,” the HKO said.
At 4pm, Ma-on was centred about 190km north-northeast of Baguio. It is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 22 kph across the vicinity of the northern part of Luzon and Luzon Strait.
After entering the northeastern part of the South China Sea, it is expected to move northwestwards, edging closer to the coast of Guangdong.
The local weather will deteriorate significantly and winds will strengthen gradually on Wednesday, the Observatory said.
Winds will strengthen further on Thursday and there will be heavy squally showers. Seas will be rough to very rough with swells and low-lying areas may have flooding, it added.
