BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Dec 5 (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): Brunei king Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah highlighted the special and close relations between his country and the United Kingdom (UK).
These relations, built on the two foundations of defence and education, continue to be reflected in the many exchanges of visits done at all levels, the monarch said, during a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister of the Britain Boris Johnson at No 10, Downing Street in London.
His Majesty also congratulated the UK on becoming a dialogue partner of Asean and for the successful hosting of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) and its Group of Seven (G7) presidency, which were held this year.
Both leaders acknowledged the establishment of the Brunei -United Kingdom strategic dialogue.
Diplomatic relations between Brunei Darussalam and the UK were established in January 1984, in which both countries cooperate extensively especially in the fields of defence, education as well as trade and investment cooperation.
Meanwhile, on August 5, 2021, the UK was Asean’s first new dialogue partner in 25 years, and Brunei Darussalam is the Country Coordinator for Asean-UK Dialogue Relations.
His Majesty was accompanied by His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen.
Meanwhile, it was reported in local media that the British Prime Minister thanked the Sultan for his support, as Chairman of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean), for the UK becoming a Dialogue Partner of the group this year.
The Prime Minister said that the UK’s new partnership with Asean, alongside the inaugural deployment of the Carrier Strike Group to the region and our application to join the CPTPP trade agreement, were all part of our increased commitment to the Indo-Pacific, a region of vital importance.
The Prime Minister looked forward to more cooperation between the UK and Brunei on important global challenges, building on Brunei’s contribution to the success of the COP26 Summit.
