Siem Reap’s 38-road project on track for December finish

Minister Sun Chanthol inspects road constructions in Siem Reap on Oct 25. - PUBLIC WORKS MINISTRY

PHNOM PENH (The Phnom Penh Post/Asia News Network): Minister of Public Works and Transport Sun Chanthol on Oct 25 led a team to inspect progress and quality of the 38-road construction project in Siem Reap province as works on the roads were almost 84 per cent complete after 11 months of construction.

The project is scheduled to be completed in December.

“The purpose of this inspection is to review progress of work and offer policies to address various challenges, and urge construction units to properly comply with building techniques and acceptable standards. So, the roads have to be solid, durable and completed as planned,” he said.

He added that the construction of infrastructure had been hampered by the Covid-19 crisis. The pandemic made it difficult for workers as well as authorities to operate. The timing of the construction was short and the team had to work hard in the rainy season, making it difficult for them to build the roads.

“However, with the commitment of the professional team... the 38 roads are being completed a little faster than planned. Hopefully, Siem Reap town will have a new face later this year with luxurious transport infrastructure, worthy of Cambodia’s cultural tourist city.”

According to a report by the public works ministry’s General Department of Technology, progress of the 38-road construction project in Siem Reap town had been 83.87 per cent complete as of Oct 15.

The report said the purpose of the project was to make the city modern, full of beauty with a good living environment and an attractive cultural and historical place appealing to tourists. It also aims to boost the national economy as well as improve connections between Siem Reap town and remote areas.

Security cameras, street lamps, traffic signs and lights and trees, among others, will be placed along the 38 roads.
