Hong Kong police arrest two suspects, seize speedboat in connection with death of officer during anti-smuggling operation

Hong Kong police and authorities in mainland China have arrested two people and seized a speedboat in connection with the death of a police officer killed during a maritime anti-smuggling operation last month.

A police source said local officers, in a joint operation with the Guangdong provincial public security department, had recently arrested the pair on the mainland.

The force was expected to hold a press conference to provide more details at 1pm on Monday.

Senior Inspector Lam Yuen-yee, 37, died after she and three colleagues were thrown overboard when their vessel was rammed by a speedboat carrying suspected smugglers they were trying to intercept off Sha Chau on September 25.

Her body was found two days later off Lantau Island.

The incident has sparked a broad crackdown on the triad-run, cross-border smuggling business.

In the first nine months of this year, police and customs officers confiscated HK$730 million ($93.8 million) worth of luxury goods, frozen meat and other contraband in 61 cross-border maritime smuggling cases.

They seized just HK$490 million worth of smuggled goods in 62 cases in the whole of last year.
