Myanmar to close schools for two more weeks amid Covid-19

YANGON, Sept 11 (Xinhua): Myanmar's Central Committee on Prevention, Control and Treatment for Covid-19 on Friday night (Sept 11) announced an extension of closure of schools for two weeks.

The closure will be applied to all basic education schools including private schools and Buddhist monastic schools until Sept 24, the announcement said.

The authorities re-closed all schools across the Asian country since early July, in an effort to curb the spread of Covid-19.

According to a release of Health Ministry on Friday, Myanmar reported 2,102 new confirmed cases of Covid-19, bringing the total tally to 427,516.

With 88 new deaths, the death toll from the pandemic has increased to 16,353 on Friday.

The Covid-19 infection was first detected in Myanmar on March 23 last year.

Last week, China had sent medical assistance of Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccines and other supplies to Myanmar. The supplies also include ventilators, oxygen generators, medical protective masks and medical protective clothing.

China also announce it will continue to cooperate with Myanmar and other Asean countries in providing assistance to fight the epidemic and restore economy. - Xinhua
