BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/Asia News Network): “China and Brunei enjoy a long history of friendship. The traditional friendship between China and Brunei has withstood the test of time and grown even more vigorous. A friend in need is a friend indeed,” said the People’s Republic of China Defence Attaché in Brunei Darussalam Senior Colonel Li Jianzhong.

He said this during a dinner reception held to celebrate the 94th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (CPLA) at The Rizqun International Hotel, Gadong on Tuesday (July 27).

Minister of Defence II Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Awang Halbi Mohd Yussof and spouse Kalshom Suhaili were present, joined by Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Brunei Darussalam Yu Hong.

The event began with the singing of the Brunei Darussalam and the People’s Republic of China’s national anthems.

The defence attaché shared on the cooperation between the two countries since the Covid-19 outbreak, including Chinese military aircraft’s delivery of medical supplies donation to Brunei last May, as well as Brunei becoming the fourth country to receive the Covid-19 vaccine donation from China in February, and the successful visit of the Chinese State Councillor and Minister of National Defence General Wei Fenghe in September 2020 which brought new progress in the relations between the two countries and militaries.

“The Ministry of National Defence of China and the Ministry of Defence of Brunei, the CPLA and the Royal Brunei Armed Force also enjoy friendly and cooperative ties.

"Both sides reached important consensus on maintaining strategic communication and deepening military exchanges and cooperation,” added the defence attaché.

“May China and Brunei achieve greater development and progress, may the Chinese People’s Liberation Army and the Royal Brunei Armed Forces further strengthen pragmatic exchanges and cooperation, and may the friendship between the two militaries further enhanced.”

The event continued with a cake-cutting ceremony and souvenir presentation by Ambassador Yu Hong to the guest of honour. - Borneo Bulletin/Asia News Network
