VIENTIANE, June 18 (Vientiane Times/ANN): Although the number of new Covid-19 cases reported each day has dwindled, testing shows that the virus continues to be transmitted through contact between infected individuals and their friends, family and colleagues.
In most cases this occurs because people ignore the Covid control measures, notably social distancing, the Laos National Taskforce for Covid-19 Prevention and Control told a press briefing on Friday.
Leading the briefing on behalf of the taskforce, Director General of the Department of Communicable Diseases Control, Dr Rattanaxay Phetsouvanh, reported the latest figures.
Thirteen new cases of Covid-19 have been recorded, bringing the total number to date to 2, 047.
The new cases were revealed after 1, 479 samples were tested on June 17.
Meanwhile, 1, 931 Covid-19 patients have been discharged from hospitals while others remain in Mitthaphab Hospital in Vientiane and Savannakhet, Champassak and Luang Prabang provincial hospitals until they twice test negative for the virus.
Seven of the new infections were recorded in Vientiane and were community-acquired, with Savannakhet recording two imported cases and Champassak recording four cases that are also believed to be imported.
Dr Rattanaxay said four cases were reported in Sikhaythong village, Sikhottabong district, and another was reported in Nongduang Tai village.
Another person in Nonsangha village picked up the virus after having contact with an infected individual at the Hamesa Police Hospital, while health workers are trying to trace another individual from Vernthan village in Xaythany district who tested positive for Covid-19.
Dr Rattanaxay urged everyone to continue to comply with all the measures imposed by the Covid-19 taskforce to keep the virus under control.
A total of 3, 893 people have been admitted to 50 quarantine centres across the country and samples taken from them are being tested for the virus. - Vientiane Times/ANN
