Royole unveils micro-LED stretchable display technology

SHENZHEN (China Daily/ANN): Royole Corporation, a Shenzhen startup that designs and manufactures thin bendable displays for foldable smartphones and other devices, said on Monday it has developed the first stretchable display using micro-LED-based technology.

Stretchable displays are not only foldable and rollable, but also can be pulled and twisted. Royole on Monday (May 24) said in a press release that its display technology is capable of 130 per cent stretchability, meaning a 10cm-long screen can stretch up to 13cm.

Displays using the technology can reach up to 120 pixels per inch, a resolution threshold capable of use in laptop screens.

The new technology could inspire new applications of flexible displays, such as smart clothing and fabric, chameleon-like skins for robots, health and fitness applications form-fitted to the human body, and globes or maps that can display geographic, historical and cultural details.

The transparency rate of the micro-LED displays can go up to 70 per cent, making it suitable for car windshields or sunglasses.

Royale launched the world’s thinnest full-color flexible display in 2014 and a foldable smartphone called FlexPai in 2018. - China Daily/Asia News Network
