Brunei: More undeclared meat, products held; records 1.7% trade drop in Oct 2020

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Jan 18 (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): Enforcement officers of the Halal Food Control Division at the Syariah Affairs Department along with the Royal Customs and Excise Department seized more raw meat without the Halal import permit on January 14.

The meat products included 50 kilogrammes of chicken wings, 10 kilogrammes of chicken thighs, 18 kilogrammes of lamb, 59 packets of Wise brand chicken sausages, three packets of Ayamas brand chicken sausages, and 20 packets of Likes brand chicken nuggets.

The operation was conducted following a public tip-off and intelligence gathered by the Halal Food Control Division on the storage of dubious raw meat at a house in Kampong Rimba.

The Royal Customs and Excise Department officers raided the premises at 9.30pm where they found raw meat in the kitchen and another room.

The items were seized and brought to the Halal Food Control Division headquarters. The case has been forwarded to the Royal Brunei Customs and Excise Department for further action.

The Syariah Affairs Department also urged the public to relay information on raw meat smuggling activities.

Meanwhile, Brunei recorded 1,470.0 million Brunei dollars (US$1.1 billion) total trade for October 2020, a 1.7 per cent year-on-year drop.

The latest International Merchandise Trade Statistics released on Sunday by the Department of Economic Planning and Statistics at the Ministry of Finance and Economy showed that Brunei's exports droped 30.1 percent year-on-year to 537.9 million Brunei dollars, and imports increased 28.5 percent to 932.1 million Brunei dollars in October.

The trade balance recorded a deficit of 394.2 million Brunei dollars in October 2020 compared to a surplus of 44.2 million Brunei dollars in October 2019.
