VIENTIANE, July 25 (The Vientiane Times/ANN): Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) has agreed to support the ‘Integrated Programme for Climate Resilience and Empowerment in Laos' Attapeu Province: Building Climate-Resilient and Eco-friendly Agriculture Systems and Livelihoods (Climate REAL).

A cooperation agreement was signed in Vientiane by FAO Representative to Laos, Nasar Hayat, and Resident Representative of KOICA Office in Laos, Sungsoo Oh, witnessed by Deputy Director of Department of Planning and Finance under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Dr Phommy Inthichack.

The project aims to address the gaps and weaknesses in the current agriculture system in Attapeu province by achieving the following three expected outcomes: climate-resilient and eco-friendly agriculture production and agriculture business management improved; household and community water management and disaster resilience enhancement; and local government and communities’ capacities for disaster risk management/climate change adaptation in the agriculture sector strengthened.

Building on capacity strengthening of local officials it will address key gaps in knowledge on climate-resilient and eco-friendly good agriculture practices.

Approximately 2,500 farming households and 150 government officials will directly benefit from the project intervention.

The project will also be implemented in close collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry as well as the relevant provincial and district authorities.

At the event, Sungsoo Oh expressed his support saying the programme was designed for mid- to long-term recovery and aimed to build resilience and sustainability in respective sectors for the livelihoods of Attapeu residents, particularly climate-resilient agriculture.

“Through this collaboration, KOICA believes residents, as well as local authorities, will highly benefit from this support by receiving new technical agricultural knowledge to apply for farming improvement,” he said.

Hayat said the agreement was an important step forward in building resilience in the farming communities of Attapeu Province and the lessons learnt from this project would also be applicable in other parts of the country with similar agro-ecological features.

The length of the project is from from August 2020 until December 2023. - Vientiane Times/Asian News Network
