Be proactive in houseman training

I REFER to the article titled “Give serious thought to working hours of housemen” (The Star, Oct 14) and would like to share my thoughts.

I am also a house officer under training in Hospital Ipoh and currently in my fourth posting.

No doubt the workload can sometimes be overwhelming as it is one of the main referral centres in the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia.

However, it is because of this workload that enables us to learn to prioritise our work as well as gain experience in patient care.

Learning opportunities are everywhere. Just because senior officers are busy with their work does not mean juniors are unable to gain any knowledge.

Help will always be given to those who need it as we work not as individuals but as a team.

We are no longer schoolchildren where we expect others to spoonfeed us with knowledge.

Be proactive to learn and I am sure one will not miss out learning opportunities.

After all, we are dealing with people’s lives. If we are unsure of what we are doing, we must enquire thoroughly so that we can minimise mistakes and prevent error in patient care.

Appropriate working hours is essential to prepare us for the next stage of our career as responsibility and expectation will only increase further when we move on to become medical officers.

Moreover, if one is keen and enthusiastic in contributing to the nation’s healthcare, one will not mind the long working hours as well as any opportunity to learn, as long as it is for the patient’s betterment.

Lastly, I hope one can have a realistic anticipation when one decides to pursue a career in medicine as it revolves around the lives of others, and one must have much determination and passion to walk down this career path.
