The remains of the girl being wheeled into the Gua Musang Hospital morgue.

GUA MUSANG: The decomposed body of a young girl has been found by local residents in the waters of Sungai Perias near here, about 500m from the school where seven orang asli children went missing more than six weeks ago.

District police chief superintendent Saiful Bahri Abdulah said local residents handed over the remains of the girl to the search parties.

However, Supt Saiful Bahri could not confirm if the body found was one of the missing orang asli children until positively identified by family members.

"Police have yet to confirm anything on the recovery of the body. We will have to wait for confirmation of her identity," he said.

He said that with the find, search efforts for the children will be concentrated around the area where the body was found.

The seven children, Mirsudiar Aluj, 11; Norieen Yaakob, ten; Ika Ayel, nine; Sasa Sobrie, eight; Haikal Yaakob, eight; Linda Rosli, eight, and Juvina David, seven, who lived in the school hostel, was said to have fled into the jungle to escape punishment after they were caught swimming in a nearby river without permission.

Recently, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi visited the parents of the missing children and pledged to continue with the search until they are found.

Dr Ahmad Zahid also said a platoon of the Senoi Praaq General Operation Force will join the search and rescue efforts as the majority of its platoon members were from the same area and were familiar with the rough and dense terrain.
