Detained: Nurul Izzah at the Dang Wangi police station.
KUALA LUMPUR: Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar was arrested and detained overnight at the Jinjang police station for an allegedly seditious remark she made in Parliament.
The PKR vice-president was arrested at about 3.30pm yesterday over a speech she read on behalf of her father, jailed Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in Parliament last Tuesday.
City CID chief Senior Asst Comm Zainuddin Ahmad confirmed that Nurul Izzah was arrested under Section 4 of the Sedition Act 1948.
When asked whether she would be remanded over the case, SAC Zainuddin said she would probably be remanded today.
Earlier yesterday, Nurul Izzah went to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters as she was served a notice to be present for her statement to be recorded over the #KitaLawan rally.
She said she was given the notice under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012 after police, who had gone to her father’s home in Segambut last Friday, failed to meet her at her house as she was on her way to Kelantan.
Nurul Izzah arrived at Dang Wangi about 2pm accompanied by Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng as well as her attorney R. Sivarasa, also the Subang MP.
She posted a tweet at about 3.30pm that read: “ASP Muniandy informed me that I have been detained on orders from the D5 deputy director in Bukit Aman.”
When leaving the police station, Sivarasa said police informed them Nurul Izzah would be held at Jinjang police station last night.
“They said the speech was seditious. The proof is already there. Why is there a need to detain her for further investigation?
“It is purely malicious and we do not accept this,” he said, adding that the speech was also made in Parliament.
“This is a Parliamentarian speaking inside Parliament and if you cannot say these things inside Parliament, that means you might as well throw Parliament away,” Sivarasa added.
