Kelantan floods worsen with over 21,000 victims evacuated

KOTA BARU: The flood situation in Kelantan has worsened with more than 21,000 evacuees seeking refuge at 84 relief centres. 

According to the state government's flood portal, there with 21,328 evacuees from 6,933 families housed at the relief centres on Sunday morning compared to 19,186 on Saturday night. 

Pasir Mas has the highest number of flood evacuees with 12,008 people at 35 relief centres compared to 11,079 a day earlier. 

In Tumpat, the number of flood evacuees has risen to 5,229 from 3,861 after Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang overflowed, exceeding the danger level of 9m. 

With the intermittent downpour, more flood victims may have to be evacuated, especially in the interior areas. 

However, the number of flood victims at eight relief centres in Kuala Krai has gone down to 1,928 from 2,452 previously. 

In Pasir Puteh, 619 flood victims are housed at four relief centres, Tanah Merah (619/14 centres), Kota Baru (336/4) and Jeli (216/4). 

No major roads are closed to traffic, while the number of deaths due to the second wave of floods in the state since Dec 16, remains at four.

Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department director Azmi Osman advised residents to follow the order to evacuate if their area is flooded and especially children not to play in the flood waters to avoid any untoward incident. 

In Terengganu, 860 flood evacuees returned to their homes on Saturday after flood waters receded, while the number of victims housed at the 100 relief centres dropped from 7,508 on Saturday night to 6,746 on Sunday morning. 

According to the Terengganu National Security Council portal, Besut is still the worst affected, with 2,459 flood evacuees from 736 families, followed by Dungun (2,281 from 608 families) and Kemaman (1,295 from 345 families). - Bernama
