Paul Low: MACC officer involved in Teoh Beng Hock investigation was promoted by the book

PUTRAJAYA: The promotion of Mohd Anuar Ismail, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer involved in the investigation on the death of Teoh Beng Hock, was done according to the Public Service Department's (PSD) regulations and procedures.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Paul Low Seng Kuan said upon checks with the MACC, it was also found that Mohd Anuar, had also undergone, among others, competency test and assessment recognised by the PSD and the promotion was also done after taking into account his service of almost 10 years.

"In line with the public service regulations, he has never been convicted with any criminal charge or offences.

"Hence, he deserves to be considered for grade promotion along with other officers on the principle of 'innocent until proven guilty'," he said in a statement here on Thursday.

Low said this in a response to a media report which stated that certain quarters were questioning the promotion given to Mohd Anuar from Grade 44 to Grade 48.

Low said following the findings of the Royal Commission of Inquiry on the death of Teoh, the MACC had also set up its own Special Investigation Team to probe into any allegation of wrongdoings involving MACC officers named in the RCI report.

As the investigation on the case was still ongoing following the decision of the Court of Appeal on Sept 5 ruling that 'a person or persons were responsible for Teoh's death', Low said it was hoped that all quarters would give their cooperation to the police.

Those involved will definitely lose their positions and other benefits if found guilty, he added. - Bernama
