SUBANG JAYA: The National Union of Flight Attendants (Nufam) raised over RM50,000 for the 10 families of the MH370 cabin crew members at its charity night on Saturday.

Nufam president Ismail Nasaruddin said the union would continue to provide strength and financial aid to the families, calling the next-of-kin of the crewmembers "heroes" from the tragic March 8 incident.

"There is no one out there stronger than the families of the cabin crew for going through what they have gone through. I thank them for putting their trust in Nufam to represent their interests.

"We have raised over RM50,000 through the donation drive tonight and we intend to continue raising funds for them," Ismail said in his speech.

National Welfare Foundation donated RM10,000 through its chairman Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdil Jalil.

"We have all felt some sort of lost, I think, and my prayer for them to continue to be strong to move on with their lives," Shahrizat said.

Ng Weng Kee, director of sales for Empire Hotel Subang, which hosted the charity dinner, presented Nufam with a RM20,000 donation.

The disappearance of MH370 left six mothers to raise their families themselves and some families without breadwinners.

Though families say they were initially taken care of by Malaysia Airlines, they claimed the airline had cut off caregiving services to those who had engaged US law firm Ribbeck Law Chartered.

The 10 crew members who were on board the ill-fated plane were in-flight supervisor Patrick Francis Gomez, chief steward Andrew Nari, chief stewardess Goh Sock Lay, leading stewardess Tan Ser Kuin, stewardesses Ng Yar Chien and Foong Wai Yeung, leading steward Wan Swaid Wan Ismail and flight stewards Tan Size Hiang, Junaidi Mohd Kassim and Mohd Hazrin Mohamed Hasnan.

All of them have served in aviation between 15 and 34 years.

Gomez's wife, Jacquita Gonzales, said the families were still struggling to return to their normal lives but found comfort in each other.

"We reminisced about the past. Did we spend enough time with them? Did we express our gratitude for all the sacrifices they have made? Did we tell our spouse just how much we loved them, not once in awhile but every single day?

"But then again we need to look forward to the present and future with those who are still with us," Jacquita said in an emotional speech.

She thanked Nufam for organising the dinner and for supporting the families.

Those who wish to donate to the crew members' families can do so at Public Bank account number 6330386721.
