Former CLP director sues Bernama for defamation

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) director Khalid Yusoff has sued national news agency Bernama, New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd and two others for defaming him.

Khalid,61, said the defendants had published libelous words  implying that he could not be trusted to hold a position.

Khalid accused Bernama of defaming him through an article, entitled "Court upholds jail term on former CLP director" published on April 21, 2009.

He said the article was republished by NSTP in its newspaper New Straits Times on the same day.

He said Insight News Sdn Bhd had on April 20, 2009 printed the article on its online news portal.

He claimed the libelous words were false, unfounded and published with malice and the publication injured his character, honour, personal reputation as an academician and lawyer.

He said defendants failed to retract the statement, offer a compensation and an apology although his solicitor had on May 2 last  year sought for the matter.

Khalid was freed by the Court of Appeal on May 27, 2010 over charges of forgery and cheating in the July 2001 CLP examination master list.
