RM1bil allocated to build Sports City

JOHOR BARU: The Government has allocated more than RM1bil to turn the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur, and its surrounding areas into a Sports City.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the major upgrading and constructions works for new infrastructures would begin this year.

He pointed out that a company had been appointed to carry out the project through an open tender process by Unit Kerjasama Awam Swasta (UKAS) of the Prime Minister’s Office.

“The tender process for the project is completed and the ministry is looking forward to seeing Bukit Jalil become a Sports City.

“There are many works to be done including building a new international convention centre as well as another indoor arena at the site because the current Putra Indoor Stadium is always fully booked with events,” he said.

He was speaking to pressmen after officiating the Fit Malaysia programme held at Dataran Bandaraya.

Khairy, who is also the Umno Youth chief, said besides building two new infrastructures, the Bukit Jalil National Stadium would also be upgraded in the RM1bil project.

“There are many things that need to be done at the National Stadium including the safety aspects, sitting area, and having corporate boxes to give a whole new experience for fans coming to the Sports City,” he said.

Meanwhile on the Fit Malaysia programme, Khairy said he was pleased with the reception from the public especially the younger generation.

He pointed out this was the seventh time the Fit Malaysia event was held in the country and its next destination was in Perlis.

“The event is part of our year-long celebration for the National Sports Day which will be held in October. There are plans to make Fit Malaysia a yearly programme and hold it in smaller cities to attract other participants and make Malaysians healthier and fitter,” he said.
