Allow firecrackers with strict conditions

IN the mid or late 1990s, the Government lifted the ban on the lighting of firecrackers during the Chinese New Year.

This prompted the management of shopping malls to light up long strings of firecrackers at the main entrance to their premises during lunch time and other appropriate time of the day much to the delight of their patrons.

But due to safety and security concerns this practise was once again banned by the Home Ministry the following year. Even though the ban is still on, one can still hear the thunderous sound of non-stop firecrackers during Chinese New Year year throughout the day.

Firecrackers are smuggled into the country due to the great demand. So, do not be surprised to hear firecracker explosions this Chinese New Year. It happens every year at all festivals despite the ban.

To the police, why not lift the ban on firecrackers during Chinese New Year with conditions attached.

The lighting up of firecrackers should only be allowed during the day and not at night.

The police can take action against those who breach the conditions.

With or without the firecrackers, Happy Chinese New Year to all Malaysians!

And safe driving when returning to your hometowns for the family reunion and celebration.
