Deputy D-G fined RM600 for driving on emergency lane

PUTRAJAYA: A Road Transport Department (JPJ) deputy director-general was fined RM600 for driving on the emergency lane.

Datuk Yusoff Ayob, who was represented by his special officer at the magistrate’s court here yesterday, pleaded guilty to committing the offence at Lingkaran Putrajaya at 6.27pm on Oct 7 last year.

Magistrate Nik Isfahanie Tasnim Ab Rahman meted out the fine on Yusoff, 58, in default seven days’ jail. He paid the fine.

Yusoff was charged with driving on the emergency lane, which is an offence under Rule 53 (1) of the Road Traffic Rules 1959.

The offence is punishable under Section 119(1)(c) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a fine of up to RM2,000 or imprisonment of up to six months, or both, if found guilty.

JPJ prosecuting officer Mohd Hafizuddin Mohd Lutfi prosecuted the case.

After the case, the reporters approached Yusoff’s special officer for the details of the case.

When a reporter asked the officer why Yusoff was not present in court, the officer then replied: “Datuk has a programme (this morning).”

Asked where the event was, the officer said it was “in the headquarters”. — Bernama
