Mum and two killed in crash on North-South Expressway

NIBONG TEBAL: A mother and her two toddlers died on the spot when the multipurpose vehicle (MPV) they were travelling in rammed into the right rear side of a lorry on the North-South Expressway.

Teoh Yee Wei, 36, her eldest son Heng Dy Hong, five, and youngest daughter Sin Ye (pic), one, were flung out of the car and died due to severe head injuries in the 6.30am incident yesterday.

Teoh’s husband Heng Cheng Hang, 37, who was driving, and daughter Sin Le, two, received outpatient treatment at the Parit Buntar Hospital for minor injuries while their Filipina maid Bacuyad Shanda was still warded with a fractured hand.

Bandar Baharu acting OCPD Asst Supt Azmi Abu Bakar said the injured trio were still too traumatised to talk at the moment.

“The family was heading to Kuala Lumpur when the incident happened. We believe the Toyota Vellfire was going uphill when the driver lost control and crashed into the back of the lorry.

“The lorry driver, Tan Kim Liang, 56, was not injured. The case was being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving,” he said.

Meanwhile, businessman Heng when met at his father’s house in Alor Setar, Kedah, where the wake for his wife and two children were being held, said the family had just celebrated Sin Ye’s birthday on March 6, and now she was gone forever.

“Every year, I never miss celebrating my children’s birthdays, and now whenever Sin Le asks me about her mother and siblings, I can only show her their photographs,” he said in tears while looking at their pictures on his handphone.

Heng in recalling the accident said the lorry suddenly appeared in front of him and it was too late for him to avoid.

“The crash flung Sin Ye out of the car and an oncoming lorry ran over her while Dy Hong, who was seated in the baby seat, died due to the impact. I believe that if the lorry had not run over my daughter she would still be alive.

“My wife who was holding on to Sin Ye at the back seat also died on the spot. What made me very angry was that no one stopped to help when I waved frantically at the passing vehicles,” he added.

Heng said he was on his way back to Kuala Lumpur after visiting his father on Friday.
