PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) views with serious concerns the dissemination of social media content that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to manipulate footage of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as he mourned the passing of his wife, the late Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.

"The use of technology to manipulate genuine footage in a way that could mislead the public, distort the context of an event, or undermine the dignity of individuals and their families should not be taken lightly, especially when it involves moments of loss and grief," MCMC said in a statement today (Oct 2).

The Commission said it has contacted the relevant social media platform and is in the process of reviewing the content.

Appropriate action may be taken under the applicable laws, including the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588).

Members of the public are also reminded not to produce, upload or spread manipulated content that could potentially mislead the public or affect other parties.

MCMC acknowledged the benefits of AI, but stressed that it must be used responsibly.

"Technology should not be used to distort the truth or exploit a person’s grief at the expense of their dignity and humanity," it added.
