PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said it is looking into public concerns over complaints related to WhatsApp accounts that have reportedly been hacked, blocked or become inaccessible.
"MCMC is looking into the complaints received and has referred the relevant cases to Meta for clarification and appropriate action," it said in a statement today (Sept 25).
MCMC explained that account compromise and account blocking are two distinct matters.
"Accounts that have been taken over by irresponsible parties may be misused for scams, spam or activities that violate WhatsApp’s terms of service, which may subsequently result in the accounts being blocked by the platform," it added.
Affected users are advised to contact WhatsApp via its official channels to begin the process of recovering or appealing for their accounts to be restored.
The public is also reminded to refrain from sharing verification codes or pins and to be cautious of parties offering account recovery services in exchange for money, personal information or verification codes.
"If the issue remains unresolved through WhatsApp’s official channels, users may lodge a complaint with MCMC for further action and referral of the case to Meta," MCMC said, adding that it will continue to monitor the issue and engage with Meta.
Meta, which is WhatsApp's parent company, acquired the messaging platform in 2014.
