NEW YORK: Gamers are set to get a closer look at the most anticipated gaming industry title in years with an extended look at the upcoming action video game Grand Theft Auto VI on Thursday (Aug 27).
The game's extended trailer – only the third since the first teaser was released in 2023 – is set to be released on Netflix on Aug 27 at 3 pm ET (1900 GMT), developer Rockstar Games says.
After more than a decade of waiting and several delays, the next instalment in the cult series is due to be released on Nov 19 and is reported to be the most valuable piece of entertainment content ever made.
Netflix subscribers are at a slight advantage, as the footage will initially be exclusive to the platform. Only six hours later will the trailer be made public to all fans on Rockstar's YouTube channel.
The announcement of the trailer on Netflix leaves many questions open, promising only an "extended look" at the game. Rockstar has not confirmed the duration of the footage, nor whether it shows gameplay.
The hype surrounding the trailer has been softened somewhat by a steady trickle of leaked footage that has given fans a glimpse of intellectual property that has been kept top secret. Leaks so far have shown a player piloting a plane, driving a motorcycle away from police and stabbing homeless people at an underpass.
With an estimated budget of well over US$1bil (RM4.04bil), GTA VI is set to become the most expensive entertainment product ever made. However, it is also proving pricey for gamers.
At prices up to US$100 (RM404), the cult game series is setting a new benchmark for premium game pricing by pushing the price tag above the US$70 (RM282.93) that has typically been asked for recent top-tier games. The US$70 (RM282.93) upper limit had been broken before, however, with Nintendo charging US$80 (RM323.34) for its flagship Switch 2 console game, Mario Kart World, in June 2025. GTA VI pre-orders have been available since the end of June.
Grand Theft Auto is one of the best-known video game series in the world and was first released in 1997. The latest instalment is set in a fictional version of the US city of Miami. Its predecessor has sold more than 200 million copies since 2013.
Trailers released so far feature high-speed car chases, fast motorboats, beaches, weapons and crocodiles. GTA VI has been delayed twice, moving from an original target of autumn 2025 and later May 2026 before settling on the November launch date. – dpa
