Your AirPods stop playing when outdoors? Check the ear detection

NEW YORK: If you have noticed that playback keeps stopping unexpectedly on your AirPods, then you may be experiencing a glitch caused by the earbuds' automatic ear detection feature.

The earbuds are set up from the factory to check whether they are properly seated in the ear, switching on – or off – automatically.

If the fit is too loose, sunlight can reach the infrared sensors used for detection. This then triggers an unwanted pause, as the device thinks it is no longer in the ear.

The simplest fix is to turn off automatic ear detection in the AirPods settings.

  • To do this, tap the small "i" symbol next to the name of the AirPods in the Bluetooth settings. In the following menu, slide the toggle next to "Automatic Ear Detection" to the left. Done.
  • Bear in mind: With this setting disabled, music will continue playing when the AirPods are removed from the ear.
  • An alternative tip: Slide some small silicone covers from an accessories retailer over the earbuds. These will provide a better fit in the ear.
