BERLIN: The FOMO is strong with Twitter fans at the moment.
With the former Twitter community now splintered across several platforms – including X (the successor to Twitter), Threads, Bluesky and Mastodon – it's easy to feel like you're missing out if you only pick one.
That's where one app tries to help, by merging the biggest rivals of X into one. Openvibe brings Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads and even the Nostr network together in a single app, letting users post to all networks at once from one account.
Users can also view timelines with content from across the platforms and search all three. The app is currently free on Android and iOS.
The biggest drawback is that Openvibe does not support X. The successor to Twitter, purchased by Elon Musk, remains a solitary platform and does not allow posts to be viewed or made on other platforms.
Unlike X, its three biggest rivals do not completely shut themselves off from one another, so there are ways to link these so-called decentralised services.
Openvibe makes use of precisely these options to let users access Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads and Nostr, and post to all networks simultaneously from one account.
Many individual features of the various services can also be used within Openvibe, and the app, available for Android and iOS, is currently completely free.
Who will ultimately win the race between short messaging platforms and become the definitive alternative to X, if any, remains far from clear. Until then, it may be worth keeping an eye on all three. – dpa
