In a world first, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has decided to integrate artificial intelligence into its legislative process. The idea is to modernise the process of drafting, revising and updating legislation, drawing on the advanced analytical capabilities of AI.
A pioneer in artificial intelligence, the UAE has a ministry dedicated to this technology, as part of The Ministry of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications. Now, the UAE aims to use AI to analyse a vast array of data, from existing laws to court rulings and various public services.
The aim is to create a comprehensive legislative database, enabling AI to automatically propose regular updates to laws, taking into account their impact on society and the economy. The stated aim is to speed up the legislative process by 70% and reduce the costs associated with traditional revisions.
For the moment, initial tests are underway to assess the effectiveness of AI in drafting and revising legal texts. But this initiative inevitably raises both ethical and legal questions, not least the fear of misinterpretation.
Initially, therefore, it will be essential to establish safeguards and guarantee human supervision before validating these texts. If successful, this type of usage could encourage other countries considering the use of AI in drafting their laws to take the plunge.
The United Arab Emirates is betting big on AI. From the start of the new school year, dedicated courses will be introduced in schools, from kindergarten onwards, to familiarise the entire population with artificial intelligence and the possibilities it offers. – AFP Relaxnews
