Telegram and WeChat first to initiate licensing to operate in Malaysia

All social media services and Internet messaging services with at least eight million registered users in Malaysia must apply for a Class Licence.

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced that Telegram and Tencent's WeChat have initiated the process of obtaining the necessary licence to operate their platforms in Malaysia.

"MCMC commends both Telegram and Tencent for their commitment to comply with the licensing requirements. Both platforms are expected to meet the necessary requirements to operate in Malaysia soon," the regulator stated.
