Telekom Malaysia Bhd has phased out its old-school high-speed Internet service, Streamyx, marking an end of an era.
A local tech site reported that the digital subscriber line (DSL) service was no longer being offered on the Unifi website, which was reportedly confirmed by a Unifi Community admin.
DSL is a technology that offers high-speed Internet connection over conventional telephone lines, enabling it to reach areas without the fibre infrastructure necessary for modern high-speed broadband Internet services like Unifi.
Though users can no longer subscribe to Streamyx, existing customers can continue to utilise the service if fibre broadband is not available in their area.
According to this tweet by Unifi, Streamyx was the first broadband service offered by the telco and originally launched 21 years ago in 2001.
It was an upgrade from TMnet’s 56kbps dial-up service and offered connection speeds ranging from 384kbps to 2Mbps.
Later rebranded as Unifi Lite, the service’s connection speed went up to 8Mbps for downloads and 512kbps for uploads, costing between RM69 to RM89 per month.
