"Mario Party" is going back to its roots in its latest edition. The series was first released for the Nintendo 64 in 1998 and "Mario Party Superstars" aims to tap into some of that nostalgia.

In terms of gameplay, the latest edition relies on familiar strengths: a bunch of little games where you have to collect as many stars as possible.

Dice are rolled, figures move across the playing field, triggering events in the process, and players find themselves in various mini-games.

Like the originals, "Mario Party Superstars" offers five game boards, and more than 100 mini-games from the first three games in the series have been revived.

The main difference being that the games are now played on the Switch console and so have had their graphics and accompanying music thoroughly upgraded.

This edition also benefits from today’s technical possibilities, such as online multiplayer mode.

While "Mario Party Superstars" may not reinvent the wheel, Nintendo is hoping that it will offer fun for friends and families with no-one feeling left out.

The game is available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch and costs around US$60 (RM251.31). – dpa
