PETALING JAYA: The floods in Selangor have damaged 342 cell towers, according to the Communications and Multimedia Ministry.
In a statement, it said 153 of the towers have been fixed and are now fully functional again while the remaining 189 are still being repaired.
The bulk of towers that still need fixing – 93 – are in Shah Alam, followed by Sepang (23), Klang (21), Hulu Langat (15) and Puchong (15).
The ministry, which is cooperating with telcos through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to repair the towers, said challenges include not being able to access some areas and lack of power.
It said Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has shut down the power supply in some of these areas as a safety precaution.
In a separate statement, Celcom said floods have impacted more than 100 of its network sites nationwide.
As of 12pm today, Celcom said it has restored 70% of the affected sites in Klang Valley, adding that it has completed restorations at Hulu Langat, and Seksyen 27 and 35 in Shah Alam.
In the eastern and southern regions, the company said it has restored more than 50% of the impacted sites, including Raub, Panching and Bukit Goh, Tanjung Lumpur and Pantai Sepat.
Meanwhile, Digi announced that it has delayed the shutdown of its 3G networks due to floods – in Perak, Kedah and Perlis it will be on Jan 3, and in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya it will be on Jan 6.
