NOW that movement restrictions are being lifted, you may be looking for a new smartphone with better cameras to document your moments.

Here we check out Oppo’s latest smartphone – the Reno6 Pro 5G – which boasts four main cameras: 50-megapixel sensor, 16-megapixel wide-angle sensor, 13-megapixel telephoto sensor and 2-megapixel macro sensor.

The smartphone did an admirable job of capturing photos – the images turned out sharp and bright but not oversaturated, preserving details that otherwise would be lost.

This was mainly thanks to the artificial intelligence (AI) being spot on, especially at ensuring vital parts of the photos were not under or overexposed.

Don’t be surprised if you are designated the cameraperson for the next outing.

The phone also does a great job with videos. The AI-powered Bokeh Flare Portrait, for example, lets you focus on a subject while blurring out the background.

If you want to create dreamy video clips of yourself or loved ones, this is the feature for you, and the Bokeh level is also adjustable.

This feature also works with the 32-megapixel front camera.

The Reno6 also has an AI Highlight mode that is useful when recording videos in challenging situations such as nighttime or direct sunlight.

It’s a cool feature to have when you are on an outing, as the resulting videos were not overly processed and looked natural.

However, this feature is restricted to 1080p even though the phone is capable of capturing videos in 4K.

There is also a dual-view recording feature that records videos simultaneously from both the front and back cameras, handy if you are into video streaming.

Smooth operator

The curved 6.5in Amoled display has a 90Hz refresh rate – though not the highest in the market, it makes scrolling through feeds super smooth.

So how does a phone with 12GB RAM and Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 5G chip perform? Again, super smooth.

I could stream a movie on Netflix and watch it in picture-in-picture mode while replying to messages and checking out social media with no slowdown.

I also checked out online platform Roblox – just because I wanted to try the games inspired by Squid Game – and graphics-heavy Asphalt 9. Everything worked without a hitch.

The phone supports Dolby Atmos which makes games feel more immersive and when playing PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) Mobile, I could clearly hear enemies creeping up on me.

On the downside, the smartphone comes preloaded with too many unnecessary apps, some of which spam notifications excessively. They can be disabled, of course.

Also, the phone lacks an audio jack and expandable storage which may put off some users. However, it has ample storage – 256MB – which should be sufficient for most users.

Lasting appeal

The Reno6 feels nice to hold as it has a sleek, slim design with a lightweight body (188g).

And the matte finish on the back not only looks beautiful but does a great job of repelling fingerprints.

The phone has a 4,500mAh battery – I could use it extensively for shooting photos and videos, navigating with Waze, and making long video calls without worrying about running out of power when I needed to scan MySejahtera QR codes.

When it does run out of power, you can get it back up to 100% in a little less than an hour as it supports 65-watt SuperVOOC 2.0 fast charging.

All in all, if you’re looking for a premium and fast smartphone that does a great job at taking photos and capturing videos, the Oppo Reno6 Pro 5G should fit the bill.

It comes in Lunar Grey and Arctic Blue.
