After an excellent year in 2020, global PC shipments are again expected to see strong growth this year. In fact, some 357 million PC shipments are forecast for 2021, a spectacular 18.1% year-on-year increase.

In 2020, PC shipments totaled 302.6 million, up from 267.6 million in 2019 – the strongest growth in PC shipments since 2010.

In the first quarter of 2021, global PC sales have already surged by over 55% year-on-year. In the end, this is relatively logical, since the covid-19 crisis began one year ago with its first set of restrictions and lockdowns.

From January to March 2021, almost 84 million PCs have already shipped worldwide, compared to just 54 million over the same period last year, reports IDC. Lenovo remains the market leader, ahead of HP and Dell. Next in line, Apple, has seen sales more than double in a year, rising from 3.1 to 6.6 million units in three months.

Despite the reported global semiconductor shortage which could disrupt PC manufacturing by the year-end, IDC remains positive for PC shipments in 2021, with figures then forecast to remain relatively stable until 2025, at just under 350 million units shipped each year. – AFP Relaxnews
