With the launch of the new Samsung Galaxy S21 on Jan 29, fans of the S-series can expect more as these units now come with Samsung’s proprietary range of chipsets.
The latest processor installed on this new smartphone range is the Exynos 2100 and it opens up more enhanced features that are fairly consistent across all the three Galaxy S21 5G models: the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+ and Galaxy S21 Ultra.
With the Exynos 2100, all three models have the capacity of connecting to 5G, a move that is borne out of the challenges of the time.
“We are living in a mobile-first world, and with so many of us working remotely and spending more time at home, we wanted to deliver a smartphone experience that meets the rigorous multimedia demands of our continuously changing routines,” said TM Roh, president and head of mobile communications business, Samsung Electronics.
Announced on Jan 12, the Exynos 2100 chipset is the company’s first premium 5G-integrated mobile processor built on the most advanced 5-nanometer (nm) extreme ultraviolet (EUV) process node.
This lowers power consumption by up to 20% while outperforming the 7nm predecessor by 10%.
The chipset supports 5G’s sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrums from 2G GSM/CDMA, 3G WCDMA and 4G LTE, producing strong network coverage and reliability.
The modem delivers a maximum downlink speed of up to 5.1 gigabits-per-second (Gbps), which is presumably twice that on currently commercialised products, as reported by business technology news website ZDNet.
It can reach up to 3.0Gbps in 4G networks with 1024 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) support.
Through a collaboration with British semiconductor company Arm Ltd, Samsung has integrated the powerful Cortex-X1 core into its processor which offers maximised performance and exceptional battery life.
The core can deliver 30% more in performance enhancement than its predecessor, while its high-end Arm Mali-G78 graphics card bumps up graphic performance by more than 40%.
It allows the Galaxy S21 Series 5G to flawlessly display stunning, seamless graphics up to 8K quality and offer immersive on-screen mobile presentation that supports intense gaming, as well as augmented and virtual reality experiences.
Power management, handled by the advanced multi-IP governor (AMIGO) technology, optimises the CPU and GPU usage as well as other processes – cranking out longer use time for extreme on-screen activities.
Significant enhancements are also allocated for heightened artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and users can expect more interactive and smart features, as well as enhanced computer vision performance in applications such as imaging.
In fact, the Exynos 2100’s advanced image signal processor (ISP) supports camera resolutions of up to 200 megapixels (MP) – connecting up to six individual sensors and processing four concurrently for richer multi- camera experiences.
With a multi-camera and frame processor (MCFP), the ISP can combine feeds from multiple cameras to improve zoom performance, enhance image quality up to 200 megapixels for ultra-wide shots and more.
This is especially so for the Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G, which has a 108-megapixel wide-angle camera that uses the Samsung Isocell HM3 sensor.
This sensor can capture sharper, more vivid images in ultra-high resolution with faster autofocus and extended dynamic range.
With AI acceleration, the ISP offers a content-aware feature that quickly and seamlessly recognises scenes, faces and objects.
It then adjusts the optimal camera settings to capture the image with fuller detail.
