Couldn't buy a PS5? Some are consoling themselves with an empty box

PETALING JAYA: Reuse, recycle, resell: enterprising individuals are riding on the hype of PlayStation 5, which is mostly sold out, and selling its box.

A Singaporean’s post went viral when he managed to sell an empty PS5 box for S$30 (RM91), which he found in a rubbish bin in his apartment.

In a Facebook post, Leslie Koh said he thought the box would make for a great Christmas prank, which prompted him to put it on sale on new and second-hand goods marketplace Carousell.

He got a reply within a day and has managed to sell it, and jokingly warned others to manage their expectations if they wanted a PS5 for Christmas, in case they get pranked.

Others too have caught on to the idea, as empty boxes can be spotted on sale on local online marketplaces for about RM100.

Student Shearil Aizad Murnizam said he decided to try his luck too after seeing Koh's post and this is his first time selling online.

“I've made it clear the box is empty, which is why I am selling it for RM100, ” he said, adding that his father was lucky to be able to snag a console on pre-order, as only 30 units were shipped to Sabah.

On Dec 12, Sony Malaysia posted on Facebook that all local units have been sold out.
