The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) announced that it will be conducting four surveys via WhatsApp and SMS – the Hand Phone Users Survey, E-commerce Consumers Survey, Consumer Satisfaction Survey (Broadband Service), and Consumer Satisfaction Survey (Mobile-Cellular Service).

It said two phone numbers – 017-728 6262 and 017-364 6262 – will be used for the surveys, and advised the public not to entertain survey notifications from any other numbers.

Selected Malaysians will receive an invitation from MCMC to participate in the surveys via WhatsApp or SMS. Those who receive an invite via SMS will be asked to reply "1" for a survey link through SMS, "2" for a survey link through WhatsApp or "3" to decline participation.

The message will also inform users that they have been selected at random and that they can contact the MCMC CATI Centre at 03-8688 8594 for more information.

For those who receive their survey invitation via WhatsApp, they can choose to reply YES to participate or NO to refuse. The first 10,000 recipients to complete the survey will receive an RM5 e-voucher as a token of appreciation.

Those who responded with YES will then receive a link to a MCMC survey portal, where they will be provided with a unique user ID and password. Upon answering all the questions, all they have to do is click "submit" to complete the survey.

Data collection will be conducted daily from 9am to 8pm, except for national and Selangor public holidays.

As a reminder to protect the public from scammers, MCMC said if they have received any calls about participating in a survey, they can choose not to decide right away.

"If you are in any doubt, ask the interviewer which organisation they are from, their full name and interviewer code. Then arrange a time for them to call you back," MCMC said in a notice.

Those affected are urged to contact MCMC's Statistic and Data Intelligence Dept through the number 03-8688 8000 to verify the legitimacy of the call.

Malaysians are urged not to divulge details such as full name, ID number or bank details to anyone claiming to be from MCMC as the agency said it does not collect personal information for the survey.

According to a June 2 announcement, the survey period began on June 5 and will continue until Dec 31, 2020. Any other announcements such as extensions or completion of the survey will be posted on the official MCMC website.
