You can now organise group calls of up to eight people simultaneously over WhatsApp.

In a blog post, the messaging service said it was doubling the number of participants in a WhatsApp video or voice call from four to eight people.

Users will need to update to the latest version of the app in order to take part in a call using the higher participant limit.

“Over the last month, people on average are spending over 15 billion minutes talking each day on WhatsApp calls, well above a typical day before the pandemic,” said WhatsApp.

It assured that like text messages, calls are protected with end-to-end encryption, adding that the group call feature is available even on lower-end devices or slow network conditions.

The service, which belongs to Facebook, said video calls were also compatible with Facebook’s Portal smart display devices.
