‘Pokémon Go’ updates battles with new attacks and mechanics

Augmented reality monster catching game Pokémon Go is introducing a slew of updates to its battle system with new attacks and some changes to battle mechanics.

"In a continued effort to make Trainer Battles a fun and competitive experience, switching Pokémon will now briefly pause the battle," says game maker Niantic, on its blog.

It explains this will grant players more time to choose which Pokémon to call out, and it will avoid Pokémon causing damage to each other while they are withdrawn into their Poké Balls.

Player versus player matches were introduced last year, where players choose three monsters to fight in a tag team battle. As some Pokémon are more effective against others, swapping mid battle is considered a sound strategy.

Niantic says Charged Attack gameplay will also be updated with new, fun swiping and tapping mechanics.

Part of the rebalancing introduces attacks that Pokémon couldn’t learn before, which would make them more competitive against enemies they would usually be weak to or more distinct with a unique skill set.

This update affects Alolan Raichu, Vileplume, Hypno, Electrode, Aerodactyl, Sceptile, Aggron, Claydol, Bronzong, Electivire and legendary birds Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres.

Niantic is also introducing two completely new attacks: a Fairy-type Fast Attack Charm and Normal-type Charged Attack Skull Bash which increases the Defense stat of the user 100% of the time.

To congratulate players for completing the recent Global Challenge, which required players to collectively solve millions of research quests, there will be bonuses including triple catch experience points (XP), double raid XP, triple hatch XP, while lucky eggs will work for an hour instead of 30 minutes.

These bonuses will run from July 10 to July 17, local time.

This weekend will also have a special event, where Fire-type Legendary beast Entei will appear as a raid boss at all gyms from 4-7pm on Sunday, July 14.

Players will receive up to five free Raid Passes, needed to participate in a raid, during the event. Lucky players might encounter Shiny Entei with alternate colour scheme.
