The headphone jack lives on, thanks to Samsung

One by one, smartphone manufacturers are turning their backs on the headphone jack. Despite wireless headphones growing in popularity, countless users say they're not ready to let go of their analogue cans. Samsung's new S10 may be the only phone for them.

It first got serious in 2016 when Apple decided to kill the headhone jack from the iPhone 7. The typically Apple move that recalled its bold decision to make laptops without DVD drives, was initially laughed off by tech reporters.

But two generations of smartphones later, finding a model that lets you plug in an analogue pair of headphones is increasingly hard.

Instead, manufacturers are pushing a combination of wireless headphones and jack-less smartphones, using the few saved millimetres of space kept for headphone jacks to make room for other features.

Thank goodness for Samsung.

Announcing its new Galaxy S10 series late on Feb 20, the South Korean maker revealed a phone that keeps the headphone jack alive – for another year at least.

While Samsung does want you to buy its newly released wireless earphones, the Galaxy Buds, it's still giving you the choice to stay analogue on its latest flagship smartphone series, the S10.

Expect jealous looks from anyone unable to plug their headphones into any of the latest phones from Apple, Google, Huawei, OnePlus, Sony, HTC Motorola and even budget Chinese brands like Oppo and Xiaomi. – dpa
