How can I exit annoying WhatsApp groups without offending the other members? The answer: You can't. There's no way of leaving a group secretly.

The other members always get a message when a person leaves. One way out of this dilemma can be to turn off group messages for a while.

This means you'll still receive any messages sent to this group, but you won't notice because your phone won't vibrate or make a noise when there's a new message.

On Android phones, open up the group, tap on the group subject and then on "Mute notifications". You can also select the length of time you want to mute notifications for: a year, a week or even just eight hours.

For those who want complete rest from annoying group messages, don't forget to turn off "show messages" so that they don't even appear on your screen.

On iOS devices the procedure for muting WhatsApp group messages is similar: Open the group, tap on the subject and then tap "mute" followed by the time period required. – dpa
