BMW has provided a glimpse into its future with the unveiling of its Vision iNext concept, an electric, self-driving car said to provide the template for the Bavarian manufacturer's upcoming models.

Combining the futuristic design of the i3 with the shape of the X5 SUV, the iNext boasts an autonomous driving system and a driving range of over 600km.

The model will also be capable of going from 0 to 100km/h in less than four seconds, BMW's head of development Klaus Froehlich confirmed.

Despite its ability to drive autonomously, a steering wheel and pedals will still feature in the iNext's sparse interior, allowing motorists to drive the model themselves.

Apart from the steering wheel and two screens on an otherwise empty dashboard, the car's interior is vastly different from current models on the market.

Comfort for the passengers seems paramount, with seats and consoles reminiscent of furniture, and the electronic features of the car mostly hidden.

Commands are made via speech, gestures or sensor fields that optically appear on seat covers or shelves when required, the designers explain.

Although the iNext marks the beginning of a new era, BMW is wasting no time in bring its concept for the future to today's market.

Production for a fully-electric Mini is planned for next year and the purely electric iX3 off-road vehicle coming the following year, BMW is eager to compete with recently introduced models by Audi and Mercedes.
