How much data are you sharing through Facebook apps?

Anyone using a Facebook account inevitably shares data with the social network and its partners. What users can restrict is the amount of shared data.

One way to do this is to stop using apps in Facebook altogether by turning off the app platform. These third-party applications sometimes have extensive access to your personal information.

Facebook’s data policy determines what the company will do with the data collected from your list of friends, preferences and personal Information. However, there’s no guarantee that this will be adhered to.

To get an overview of the apps you’re using and the Facebook profile data they have access to, just click on "Settings", then "Apps". To do the same with the smartphone app, tap on "Account Settings", then "Apps". Here you’ll find the Facebook apps you’re actively logged onto.

This is also where you can disable the complete app platform for your own profile. Those who decide to take this step will no longer be able to use Facebook games or other programs. But this also means that third parties won’t be able to get access to your information through the apps you’re using.

If you want to continue using Facebook apps and games, you can adjust their permissions. This can be done in the settings under "Apps" by clicking on the respective program in the list. Here users can see and in some cases adjust which information an app is allowed to access, but make sure to click on "Save" after doing so. — dpa
