Spotify ends streaming through numerous smart speakers

Following an update to Spotify's Connect service, many users of smart speakers will now be limited to streaming music via smartphone or computer, either with Bluetooth, Google Cast, Airplay or a simple auxiliary cable. — dpa

Just as Apple enters the world of smart speakers with its connected HomePod device, Spotify has pulled its integration into numerous speakers, including Bang & Olufsen, Marantz, Denon, Onkyo, Philips and Yamaha.

This means it's no longer possible for users to listen to music on loudspeakers without using a smartphone or computer.

While some firmware updates will allow users to regain access to their music from the speaker, users of various other smart speakers will notice the Spotify Connect function has been completely removed.

"The way to listen to Spotify with some speakers and sound systems is changing," Spotify said in a list of models impacted by the change.
