Malaysia will have its Big Data Week 2015@ Kuala Lumpur, part of a festival in April and May, where Big Data Week is held in cities all around the world.Big Data refers to large, complex sets of data that require specialised tools for analysis, while Big Data Analytics refers to analysing data to come up with business insights.
Big Data Week 2015 @ Kuala Lumpur will be a two-day conference and exhibition to educate, inform and inspire entrepreneurs and businesses across Asean on Big Data Analytics (BDA) practices and technology.
Big Data gurus including renowned global data scientists from organisations and companies such as Harvard University, Lazada, Open Data Institute, Gartner, Accenture and World Bank. They will share their expert knowledge on how businesses can use BDA insights and trends to explore commercial opportunities.
The Big Data Week@ Kuala Lumpur will include meet-and-greet sessions with chief data scientists, big data influencers and innovators, talks by international speakers, panel sessions with local and global data hub players, debates and live demonstrations of innovative BDA applications by local technology players.
This event is open to all professionals from policy makers, business owners, chief executives, marketers, statisticians to consultants, to learn from world’s leading experts on how BDA will change the way we work towards better service and profitability.
The exhibition features innovative Big Data Analytics solutions from multinational companies and local companies.
One example is Tapway Malaysia, a local retail analytics start-up will be demonstrating its Customer Relationship Management & Analytics solution that has potential to change Malaysia’s shopping centres and hypermarkets experience.
This solution helps retailers analyse data collected on shoppers’ behaviour, store traffic, brand preference, tenant sales and direct feedback. IT Software company, Fusionex will also be showcasing its Big Data Analytics solution that displays processing and data integration from multiple sources for retail and fast moving consumer goods, financial services, telcos, travel & hospitality, manufacturing industries to help them drive revenue and lower down costs.
The event was first introduced in KL in 2013 by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC), the lead agency responsible in building ecosystems for big data analytics under the National Big Data Analytics Initiative.
This year, it is working together with Data Storage Asean, an online media and publishing company that specialises in data and storage stories, to facilitate the sharing of knowledge, new ideas about data.
Karl Ng, director of innovation capital, MDeC said, “In 2013, we identified Big Data Analytics as a key enabler in developing Malaysia’s digital economy and this annual event is a strategic place for local, regional and global players to share their knowledge on this game-changing technology. I urge entrepreneurs, businesses as well as fresh graduates who are planning to further their studies in computer science and IT to come to the event and meet the Data Scientists.”
The Big Data Analytics (BDA) market in Malaysia is set to reach US$36mil (RM130mil) in 2015, a 28% increase from the previous year with a five year Compounded Annual Growth Rate of around 30%, according to market intelligence provider, International Data Corporation.

Big Data Week 2015@ Kuala Lumpur will be open to the public at Sunway Convention Centre on April 21 and 22. There will be events on April 20, 23 and 24 but only for invited guests.
This is the third Big Data Week@Kuala Lumpur organised by MDeC.
