The Coolest Cooler breaks Kickstarter records

SWISS KNIFE OF DRINK HOLDERS: The Coolest Cooler has an integrated battery-powered blender for smoothies and cocktails, a water-resistant Bluetooth speaker, a built-in chopping board, a USB charger for keeping smartphones powered up and chunky tires for easy rolling over the sand.

A beachside drinks and food cooler for the digital generation is now officially the most successful Kickstarter campaign of all time, raising an incredible US$10.36mil (RM32.63mil) in pledges, and the campaign is yet to close.

However, even though there are still three days left to run, the Coolest Cooler has already comfortably overtaken the Pebble smartwatch, which managed to bag US$10.26mil (RM32.31mil) in backing in May 2012.

What makes the Coolest Cooler so cool? After all, the concept of the cooler predates the refrigerator.

Its creator, Ryan Grepper, will point to the fact that it's a cooler for the 21st century so as well as insulating perishables from the elements, it has an integrated battery-powered blender for smoothies and cocktails, a water-resistant Bluetooth speaker, a built-in chopping board, a USB charger for keeping smartphones powered up and chunky tires for easy rolling over the sand.

But there are also other elements at play. The campaign started just as the summer arrived, and the initial funding goal — just US$50,000 (RM157,500) — was low enough to make backers happily risk pledging just US$5 (RM16).

As Digital Trends points out, this is actually the second outing for the Coolest Cooler. It initially appeared on Kickstarter during the winter with a higher US$125,000 (RM393,793) target and bombed.

And as the money has rolled in, the Cooler has become, well, cooler.

When it ships to its first backers in February, it will also have a retractable protective drawer for storing smartphones and the like, a removable rechargeable battery, and will be able to automatically pair with another Coolest Cooler for stereo speaker sound.

And, at the time of writing, 49,154 orders had been made with backers paying between US$165 (RM520) and US$185 (RM583) for an early-bird edition and 228 people paying US$1,750 (RM5,513) each for a set of 10 coolers.

The Coolest Cooler Kickstarter campaign closes on Aug 30, so there's still time to snap one up for US$185 (RM583) in time for next year's summer vacation.
