Sony makes a Move

Sony makes a move (pardon the pun) to capture some of the casual games market share with the PlayStation Move, which it officially launched at an event in Kuala Lumpur.

PlayStation Move system is Sony’s answer to motion control and is made up of a number of peripherals, namely the Move motion controller, the Move navigation controller and the PlayStation Eye camera.

The Move motion controller, which has a translucent ball on one end lit by an RGB LED that can change colour, is the main motion controller that wirelessly connects to the PlayStation3.

The controller itself has a number of motion sensors built-in which work together with the camera on the PlayStation Eye (which “sees” the lighted ball on the controller) to sense the position and motion of the controller in three-dimensional space.

The Move navigation controller, on the other hand, is analogous to Nintendo’s Nunchuk controller, with a thumbstick that is used for moving a game character.

While the PlayStation Eye and the Move motion controller are required for all upcoming motion-controlled games, the navigation controller is only required in only a few of these games.

Some twenty Move-specific game titles will be available at launch, and includes Capcom’s Resident Evil 5, Namco Bandai’s Time Crisis: Razing Storm as well as Sony’s own Sports Champions, Kung Fu Rider, Start The Party! and others.

Each peripheral can be bought separately — the PlayStation Eye has a recommended retail price of RM128, while the Move motion controller will go for RM188 and the Move navigation controller will retail for RM128.

Sony is also offering a PlayStation Move Basic Pack which will bundle the Move motion controller, the PlayStation Eye camera, a PlayStation Move starter disc and one PlayStation Move software title for RM298.

There is also a PlayStation Move Starter Pack which will have just the Move motion controller, PlayStation Eye camera and PlayStation Move starter disc for RM238. None of the packages include the Move navigation controller which will have to be purchased separately.

The PlayStation Move peripherals will be available on Sept 15.

At the same event, the company also introduced new PlayStation3 models, an RM1,239 model with 160GB and an RM1,299 model with 320GB. A new “classic white” colour option is also available for the 160GB option.
