Pseudo vacuum tubes, anyone?

PERHAPS you come from a time when vacuum tube amps were the norm and audio came out “warmer” on LPs.

Now Taiwan-based Formosa21 has come up with the AS301DTS, which is a USB dongle that can process and output DTS surround sound to your headphones.

The AS301DTS looks exactly like a single old vacuum tube (although it isn’t) and plugs right into your PC’s USB port.

From there, there’s a regular 3.5mm stereo audio output where you plug in a pair of regular headphones to give you a 5.1 surround sound effect based on the DTS data received from a DVD or other DTS-encoded file.

In a similar vein is the AS301HPA, which is a portable amplifier meant for portable media players.

The AS301HPA looks like its sibling, but lacks the USB connector — instead, this connects via regular 3.5mm stereo jacks between your earphone and your media player and acts as an amplifier to boost audio quality.

Suggested retail price of the AS301DTS is RM165 while the AS301HPA portable amplifier is RM145.
