It was not easy, but the judges for the In.Tech/Samsung “Your Desk Tells A Lot About You” contest sorted through the entries and whittled them down to just three of the best.
The contest invited readers to send in photos of their computer workstations with a short explanation of their workspace for a chance to win one of three Samsung business laser printers.
Each photo had to fall under one of three categories, namely whether their workstations were minimalist, geek or greenie.
The judges — In.Tech editor Ronald Byrne and assistant editor Kelly Goh, Star Publications advertisement sales (agency) account manager Steven Choo, and Samsung’s senior staff for marketing communications (IT division), Elayne Lim — picked the three winners.
The lucky three are Dr Alan Tan for the minimalist category, Umadevi Vengdesh for the greenie category and Lim Ai Ping for the geek category.
Dr Tan, who is a telemedicine doctor, not only impressed the judges with what he left out from his minimalist workstation, but also with the meaningful decorations that he did have.
In Dr Tan’s own words, when he puts a little helicopter model on his monitor it’s “a signal to my staff to be aware that we have a helicopter evacuation going on so we have to plan for the medical evacuation.”
His minimalist desk won him a Samsung CLP-325 colour laser printer.
Greenie category winner Umadevi Vengdesh on the other hand, submitted a photo of a veritable jungle of plants peppered around her workstation.
Nicknamed “jungle woman” in school, Umadevi says the plants on her desk remind her of an active childhood spent climbing trees and going on little adventures with her late grandmother.
Umadevi wins the Samsung CLX-3185 multifunction colour laser printer.
Last but not least, Lim Ai Ping bags the prize in the geek category because of the organised chaos of her desk, which is filled with figurines and other toys, reflecting her interests in movies and her creative interests.
Lim will now have to make space on her desk for a Samsung ML-1660 monochrome laser.
